What are the different types of roof systems?

There are a lot of talks about the basement and its importance in a building. However, a component that is equally important but is not discussed much is roofing. It maintains the climate inside the home and keeps your family safe.

There are different roofing systems; you can opt for one based on your taste, needs, budget, and other requirements. Read through the different roofing systems to understand and choose the best fit.

Asphalt roofing

Asphalt roofing systems are made with a combination of asphalt, fiberglass, minute granules, and other components. Asphalt roofing lasts about 10 to 30 years and comes in multiple colors and styles.

It requires significantly less maintenance and is affordable. The shingles are on the surface placed on mostly sheets of plywood.

Metal roofing

Metal roofings are now used for both commercial and residential purposes. It is also known as standing seam roofing. Over the years, the look and quality of metal roofings have grown tremendously. Metal roofing is also durable, fireproof, and corrosion-resistant. The metal roofs are primarily long strips that are overlapped and have a raised seam that prevents additional water flow. While some metal roofing types need professional installation, a few other varieties can be easily installed.

Metal roofing also mimics several other types of roofing and gives an aesthetic appeal to your property.

Rubber Membrane roofing

Rubber membrane roofing is made from EPDM – ethylene propylene diene terpolymer. So rubber membrane is essentially a petroleum product. This roofing is waterproof. Rubber membrane roofing is made in the shape of sheets or rolls. They also come in different sizes and widths. These sheets are then pasted on a wood deck.

Clay Tile roofing

Clay tile roofing is slightly heavier. It is available in different shapes, colors, and sizes. Some clay tile varieties also mimic wood, slate, and other types of roofing. Depending on the style and size of the clay tile variety, it should be installed with care. Additionally, clay tiles are fragile and need more professional handling.

Slate roofing

Slate roofing has been one of the most commonly used roofing systems. It has been in the market for hundreds of years and is slightly less weight than clay tile roofing. In addition, slate roofing clicks all the right boxes, from an aesthetic quality and classic style to color variation.

If we look at its cons, slate roofing needs to be engineered to assist its weight and requires professional guidance to install. So it is both relatively expensive and time-consuming.

Solar Tile roofing

Solar tile roofing is one of the green roofing systems and is very eco-friendly. The tiles are incorporated with the solar collection formats. While people used to attach solar panels over existing rooftops, this variety of solar tile roofing has proved to be more valuable and high in quality.

Composite and Rubber roofing

Another important eco-friendly roofing style is composite and rubber roofing. True to its name, a composite of used tires are made and styled to mimic other kinds of roofs. Though more expensive than most other roofing, composite and rubber roofs are long-lasting, sustainable, and environmentally rich. It also requires less installation cost.
